Statement
As a member of BPW, I have been working hard
on gender equality and gender empowerment, especially of business
and professional women.
1) The reason to be a candidate for
the vice president
I’d like to work as vice president
of BPWI, because I found an urgent problem to tackle
with other members. The aging era is rapidly expanding
not only in Japan but also in many countries. This is a serious
issue for both the aged and the young generation. So as BPWI,
which concerns women’s situations in various stages
of their life, the immediate measurements for the
aging era and/or society should be made, including
one who have worked for the business. For this reason: If
I would be elected, I should like to frame out the
BPWI guideline and to challenge with other members for this
issue. Japan is the top runner of the aging society
in the world, and is facing with lots of difficult subjects
for women who have worked to challenge the gender discrimination
of labor markets.
2) My Activities in BPW and in other
NGOs
I became a member of BPW Tokyo 35 years
ago, and have worked as the president of BPW-Tokyo Club. At
that time, the main theme was the amendment of the gender
discriminated labor standard law. In 1999 I was elected as
the chair of standing committee of the environment
& sustainable development of BPWI and had a chance
to participate in the UN Global Environment Meeting at Johannesburg
(2000) and UN- CSW of 2001 (main theme was the environment).
Since then, I have been attending the UN-CSW every year, and
I could build deeper bond with government delegations, BPWI
members, and other NGOs participating the meeting. Through
these experiences, I could come up with an idea of new project
and submitted it to BPW Japan such as “CSW Internship
Project” which has been continued for these
five years by BPW-young members of Japan.
In a federation level, I have worked as the
president of BPW Japan for 6 years. At the same time, I was
elected as the board member of the umbrella organizations
called the International Women’s Year Liaison Group
(organized in 1975 by 42 national women’s organizations)
and the National Women’s Committee of UN NGOs (organized
in 1958 by 10 organizations belonging to international organizations).
Through these organizations, BPW Japan has nominated
some members for the seat of public committees and our NGO
delegation to UN General meeting as government delegation.
Taking these concerns and experiences I have
into consideration, I am sure I can work as the vice president
of BPWI energetically in order to make women’s situation
better in all stages of their life. I hope that my suggestion
of creating guideline and measurement for aging society
by cooperation with all BPWI federations will contribute to
our future of BPWI as well as working women in the world. |
