BPW
New Zealand established its national
mentoring program in 2006. Several clubs
located in Whangarei and Auckland have mentoring
programs which are focused on personal and
career development. The membership of BPW
New Zealand is diverse in both expertise
and life styles, including women studying
for qualifications, city and country women
in business and the professions, employees,
managers, self-employed and business owners.
The BPW New Zealand mentoring program is
focused on linking members with specific
programs related to individual development,
career or business needs. Through the mentoring
program, other BPW members with a particular
expertise can provide the tools to facilitate
the sharing of knowledge and skills.
Some of the events and workshops that the
BPW clubs in New Zealand have implemented,
include Regional Training Days; and to promote
the national mentoring program. Mentoring
workshops were presented at the annual National
Federation Conference.
This year, BPW New Zealand plans to link
their mentoring program with BPW New York’s
Individual Development Program (IDP). The
IDP will be modified for the New Zealand
environment and it will be open for enrollment
to non-members, women in their communities
and to senior girls from local high schools.
Clubs are expected to make a formal commitment
to become a “mentoring club”
and will appoint a mentoring coordinator
to facilitate the programme within the club.
BPW New Zealand has produced a brochure
promoting and explaining the mentoring program,
and instituted a formal new member induction
that eventually leads into participation
in the mentoring program if the member so
desires.
The mentoring program has led to an increase
in membership, participation and enthusiasm
in New Zealand.
