Each Standing Committee, except the Finance Committee, consists of not less than four (4) and not more than six (6) members in addition to the Chairperson. The Finance Committee consists of the Finance Director who chairs the Committee, and not less than two (2) and not more than three (3) members.


Agriculture Standing Committee


It shall be the duty of the Agricultural Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on agriculture approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To collate and circulate such information to Affiliates which may contribute to the employment and professional recognition of women in rural areas.
3.
To encourage Affiliates to seek to provide women with suitable training to enable them to promote and improve their agricultural skills, embodying where necessary, technical co-operation and advisory services.
4.
To encourage women to seek access to the use of legal security benefits and development of land, in equality with men.
5.
To liase with BPW International Representatives at the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (lFAD), and with other international, national and regional organizations associated with agriculture

Business Trade and Technology (BTT) Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Business, Trade and Technology Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Business, Trade and Technology approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To liase with Affiliates on the setting up of local committees to promote the interests of women in business.
3.
To assist Affiliates in organising local seminars and workshops designed to provide support for women in business and enhance their contribution to the economic well-being of their country.
4.
To disseminate information between Affiliates and promote a lively exchange of ideas, so as to encourage and stimulate members in businesses at all levels.
5.
To be responsible for the organization of such workshops and trade presentations at International Congresses, as may be thought by the Executive Committee to be both desirable and appropriate.



Development, Training and Employment (DTE) Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Development, Training and Employment Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Development, Training and Employment approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To carry out research in their region on existing facilities in the areas of
3.
Education, vocational training, Advanced Education, and
4.
Career information, career structure and their availability to women
5.
and to pass on this information to their Affiliates.
6.
To advise Affiliates on evaluating changing work patterns and encourage Affiliates to press for developments in education and training to meet these changes.
7.
To maintain and develop the closest co-operation and working relationship between BPW International and the Representatives to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO) and those of any other agencies of relevance to the Committee and the aims of BPW International; to provide Affiliates with contacts and addresses of these offices in her region, encouraging them to obtain information on the above subjects.
8.
To urge Affiliates to lobby their governments for changes in legislation to ensure equal pay for work of equal value for men and women and to establish contacts with trade unions, employers' organizations and any other spheres of influence which may assist them in securing their objectives.

Environment Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Environment Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Environment approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To improve environmental awareness and responsibility amongst BPW International members at all levels.
3.
To ensure the establishment and use of a credible international voice of women in business, in respect of matters relating to the environment.
4.
To create a framework that makes it easy for Affiliates to establish environmental committees.
5.
To ensure the timely dissemination of relevant information on sustainable development in environmental issues to Affiliates.
6.
To ensure the effective use and involvement in relevant networks to support and develop both international and national environmental committees.
7.
To see that the principles of Agenda 21 are implemented, and in particular, Chapters 24 and 30, through the establishment and continued workings of the International Environment Committee
8.
To prepare written, clear cogent and relevant objectives and guidelines to give a framework for the carrying out of the above.


Finance Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Finance Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Finance approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To annually prepare a budget covering regular requirements of BPW International and items specifically authorised, for presentation to the Executive Committee or Congress.
3.
To make recommendations for the establishment of a sound and balanced financial policy.
4.
To consider the necessity of increasing the rate of annual dues prior to each Congress; to prepare any necessary By-law amendment and/or resolution in accordance with the Articles X and XII of the BPW International Constitution; to present a report of its findings to the Congress.
5.
To develop a Fundraising Committee on fundraising strategies, providing advice where necessary on rules and regulations in various countries pertaining to these activities.
6.
To promote subscriptions to BPW International publications.


Health Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Health Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Health approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To liase with the President to implement the Plan of Action presented to the World Health Organisation to establish official relations with that organisation
3.
To help affiliates in seeking to promote primary health care, giving priority to the needs of women, emphasising preventive medicine and occupational health problems.
4.
To collate and circulate information to Affiliates on food, nutrition and hygiene problems.
5.
To encourage Affiliates to help promote extensive health education programmes
6.
To concentrate on occupational health problems, seeking solutions by establishing contacts with agencies such as the WHO, ILO, Government departments and study groups and encouraging Affiliates to press for changes in legislation where necessary.
7.
To inform Affiliates in each region of the contact names and addresses of the above mentioned agencies and government department and to urge them to seek to be placed on their mailing lists.


Legislation Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Legislation Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Legislation approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To promote knowledge and understanding for Affiliates of international conventions, covenants, recommendations and agreements which deal with subjects of interest to BPW International and which entail implementation by legislative action at national level.
3.
To notify Federations, State Federations and Affiliates to seek, as necessary, national implementation of measures adopted at international level that come within the competence of BPW International.
4.
To request, collate, maintain a database and circulate information received from Affiliates concerning new national legislative measures of special interest to BPW International.

Membership Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Membership Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Membership approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To provide information on the structure, aims and objectives and functions of the BPW International to potential members.
3.
To encourage and assist business and professional women to form clubs and seek affiliation with BPW International, and provide the necessary information on constitutional requirements, application procedures and the guidelines for the inauguration ceremony.
4.
To assist in membership development in all countries where Affiliates exist; such assistance to include advice on membership problems, techniques to retain existing members, the organization of membership workshops and programmes and the distribution of membership publications.
5.
To work with the Public Relations Committee and the President in the creation of suitable promotional material for exiting and potential members.
6.
To continually update the contents and presentation of Membership materials, submitting these for prior approval by the Executive.
7.
To develop an ongoing programme of potential visits by her and members of her committee, and shall submit this to the President for approval.
8.
To press those Affiliates which have not yet done so to set up a database of their membership. And to send the data on disk to the “Members” office for incorporation into a master database.
9.
To ask Affiliates which have already set up a database to send the data on disk to Headquarters, and to keep the “Members” office informed of all updates.

10.

The Membership Chairperson shall be responsible for the monitoring of this programme.


Projects Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Projects Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Projects approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To investigate and evaluate projects submitted which may have impact at international level. If considered suitable, to present this to the Executive Committee with her recommendations.
3.
To encourage the development of activities of Affiliates in supporting, fully, such projects as may be decided upon by the Board of Directors or Executive Committee or at a Congress.
4.
To assist Affiliates in developing local, national and international projects, and to seek information about funding sources: public or private.
5.
To establish contacts with such agencies as UNIDO, IFAD, PRODEC, CBI, WWB, UK Lottery Fund and other foundations to obtain information on training, business planning, funding, etc.
6.
To work with the President to monitor and initiate projects which are suitable for presentation to the Five – O Committee
7.
To liase with Affiliates to encourage them to make donations to Project Five – O and to keep them informed of opportunities for making donations to such projects.
8.
If possible, to attend the annual Five – O meeting at the invitation of the President

Public Relations Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Public Relations Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Public Relations approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To promote the BPW International publications. To provide the editors with promotional material on a regular basis.
3.
To liase with the Administrator, President, and Membership Chair in the production of other BPW International publicity materials
4.
To work with other committees, and especially the Membership Committee, in the creation of promotional material for BPW International.
5.
To make recommendations for new publications and advertising material.
6.
To maintain an updated list of international press agencies, TV Channels and other communication networks.
7.
To produce Press Releases whenever events of note organised by Affiliates take place, eg Regional meetings, congresses, exhibitions, trade fairs, training programmes, as well as UN meetings where BPW International is involved.
8.
To organise and set up an experienced and competent team at Congress to ensure adequate media coverage and daily press releases and daily newssheets for delegates.
9.
To establish contacts with Affiliates in each region and to ask them to send information about their future programmes so they may help in their promotion.


United Nations - Status of Women Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the United Nations - Status of Women Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on United Nations - Status of Women approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To promote knowledge and understanding through the Newsletter and other BPW International publications of international conventions, covenants, recommendations and agreements, which deal with equal opportunity and status of women and which entail implementation by legislative action at national level.
3.
To encourage governments to set up national machineries for the implementation of the above where necessary.
4.
To receive reports and appropriate documentation from BPW International's accredited representatives at the United Nations (UN) and its specialised agencies and develop with them an efficient communication system.
5.
To liase with other BPW International Committees to assist Affiliates to work for equal opportunities and status of women in the economic, civil and political life of their countries.
6.
To attend UN meetings of particular importance to the work of BPW International where possible, and submit reports on these in particular to attend the Commission on the Status of Women and any such Women’s Conferences as appropriate.
7.
To work with the President to write and/or approve of statements made by the President, the UN Chair or the BPW International representatives at the UN Offices.
8.
To write the United Nations Section of the Newsletter and supply the copy for this section to the President’s Office by 20th of each month.

 

Young BPW Standing Committee

It shall be the duty of the Young BPW Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on Young BPW approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To identify the continuing needs of Young BPW from BPW International and other sources.
3.
To encourage Young BPW to assume positions of responsibility at local, national and international levels within BPW International and become part of decision-making teams.
4.
To develop international links for Young BPW through:

a. An international forum for Young BPW
b. International exchange programmes in education, training, professional development and entrepreneurial undertakings.

5.
To maintain the Young BPW Newsletter for Young BPW members and distribute it to all affiliates , Executive Board and subscribers,
6.
To use Regional Co-ordinators and regional committee representatives to develop links within regions.
7.
To encourage twinning by working with the BPW International Task Force of the Twinning Committee.
8.
To develop and maintain an international databank of Young BPW to facilitate networking and to make this available to the Headquarters.
9.
To develop channels of communication.
10.
To encourage Young BPW to attend International Congresses, regional meetings, national conferences and local meetings.
11.
To organise workshops locally, nationally, regionally and internationally on areas of concern to women and liase with the various Committees to obtain information pertaining to the workshops being set up.
12.
To develop public relations to promote a Young BPW profile, liasing with the BPW International PR Committee and using the press, radio, TV and video presentations. Keep a register of presenters and journalists sympathetic to the aims of BPW International. Encourage Young BPW to develop contacts in these areas for future use.
13.
To encourage Young BPW to develop knowledge, understanding and interest in the work of the UN and specialised agencies and how to use these to organise projects, funding, seminars, training programmes, etc.

Miscellaneous committees are appointed by the President and are made up of members with appropriate skills. The Constitution Advisory Committee is chaired by the Executive Secretary.

Ad Hoc Committees are appointed by the President to serve for a term following each Congress.

Constitution Advisory

It shall be the duty of the Constitution Advisory Committee:

1.
To implement resolutions on the Constitution approved as BPW International policy at Congress.
2.
To make recommendations to the Executive Committee and to the Membership Committee Chairperson regarding the Constitution and By-laws of new Federations, Stated Federations and new Associate Clubs, on application for membership
3.
To review amendments to the Constitution or By-laws of a Federation or Associate Club, which shall have been notified to the Director, in accordance with Article IV, Section 9 of the BPW International Constitution.
4.
To make recommendations regarding proposed amendments to BPW International's Constitution and By-laws.
5.
To generally advise on the Constitution and By-laws of BPW International as needs arise and on any queries arising there under.
6.
To redraft the Constitution and By-laws of BPW International incorporating amendments agreed upon at a Congress.

Resolutions

The Executive Secretary will supply to the Chairman of the Resolutions Ad Hoc Committee, for reference, a set of the Resolutions, which have been passed at previous Congresses.

It shall be the duty of the Resolutions Committee:

1.
To edit the Resolutions received, in consultation with the proposer
2.
To co-ordinate the Resolutions.
3.
To determine the Resolutions to be accepted.
4.
To liase with her committee to solicit appropriate resolutions for the ensuing Congress
5.
To update the Resolutions Book and electronic material following Congress.


 


There are currently four (4) Task Forces

  1. Information Communication and Technology (ICT)
  2. Mentoring
  3. Twinning
  4. Peace
  5. Leadership
  6. Communication
  7. UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women)

A "Task Force" is a structure created for a specific purpose, not necessarily permanent, and established to research solutions in a particular field.

The President will appoint the Task Force leader and members of the committee

The Executive Board at each of its meetings monitors the achievements of a Task Force and the Executive decides on its ongoing viability

A Task Force will continue while it is still serving a useful purpose.

The Plan of Action of a Task Force should indicate:

  • The objective implicit in its name
  • A feasibility study
  • Action necessary to achieve its objective(s)
  • Support expected from the administration and/or other bodies
  • Time frame for the various phases.

This plan will then be examined by the Executive Board which will communicate to the person responsible for the Task Force its suggestions, comments, acceptance.

Information Communication Technology

The duties of the Task Force on Communication and Technology shall be:

1.
To assist in organising and coordinating any BPW International online requirements.
2.
To be responsible for maintaining and overseeing the sparklist.
3.
To be responsible for maintaining the BPW International website and updating as appropriate.
4.
To enter on the website such information as is provided by the President’s Office and Executive Secretary. Including the official contacts of BPW International, the monthly newsletter, the merchandise available from the President’s
