With the view to improve
the socio -economic status of women by providing
access to sustainable micro credit services
for the poorest or grass root women, to
enable them to engage in self-employment
and micro enterprises.
In 1996 micro credit project for women was
introduced by the government of Nepal with
the financial support of Asian Development
Bank (ADB).
At that time 17 non-government organizations
were selected to implement this project
in different districts of Nepal. Among them
Kathmandu BPW and Patan BPW, the chapters
(clubs) of BPW Nepal were selected to implement
this project, since then the micro credit
program has been continuously lunching by
these 2 chapters in different villages.
Activity no.1
BPW Kathmandu in Kathmandu district has
been working as social Intermediatery for
micro credit program for women. Women cooperative
established in Kathmandu Metropolitan City
in the beginning of 2002.

Results:
- Approximately 100percent women (375
women) were benefited from Saving\credit
program.
- 16 percent from the total 375 women
were benefited from the cooperative.
- Mushroom was marketed to the hotels
in the Kathmandu city - most profitable
and good income.
- Male partners of women were very supportive
to do mushroom cultivation & marketing.
- Though mushroom cultivation is the indigenous
skill in that village, Kathmandu BPW motivated
poor women to do this activity through
skilled trainings and saving \credit practices.
- Forty (40) women who were trained in
Dhaka cloth weaving employed in Dhaka
weaving factory and 10 women engaged in
weaving Dhaka individually at home, 10
women were still waiting for work. Because
Dhaka Weaving at home is very expensive
(Machine, threads are expensive)
- Women in Poultry keeping business (10
percent) generated income but not so much
profitable due to low production (egg
and meat) because of chicken diseases.
- Decision making of all the rules and
regulations done by the executive committee
of cooperative and groups meetings.( those
who are not belong to cooperative)
- Skilled training for women of micro
credit was also an important part carried
out by Kathmandu BPW such as
- One week pickle making training
- Three months sewing
- One week costing, pricing and marketing
- One month compost (organic) making
- Three-month mushroom cultivation.
- Three months Dhaka cloth weaving
- One week, Gender, Leadership and
Enterprise development.
- Four days Floriculture
These trainings
and micro credit program in Balambu village
were conducted under the project Economic
empowerment of women..
Activity no.3
Patan BPW in Lalitppur
district has been working as financial intermediatory
for Micro credit program for women.
- For the first 3 years BPW Patan worked
as social mobilizer then it became credit
agent for 2 years.
- BPW Patan received licence to work as
a financial intermediator from the government
bank (Nepal Rastra Bank).
- Collected Savings from women groups
since then (each individual of the group).
- Disbursed loans to women members under
group guarantee, no collateral required.
- BPW Patan under this system lends without
collateral at the doorsteps of the poor
women.
