Coverage: 3 villages in 3 districts of Nepal
Target Beneficiaries: Women Farmers (Disadvantaged group)
Activities at sites (villages) have been implemented through BPW chapters (clubs) of Nepal -six sites in 3 villages of 3 districts.

Conducted one week TOT training for 12 local trainers in functionalliteracy class, Agriculture, Social development and Enterprise development including micro credit Achievement / output:

Local trainers. (having qualification of 10 and 10+2 class passed) acquired the knowledge and skill on using participatory methodology during the training on functional literacy, agriculture, social and enterprise development for other women groups at sites.

Local trainers were also trained in improved traditional methods and modern new technologies used in agriculture. They were familiarized about gender equity and equality, leadership development, political empowerment and entrepreneurship / enterprise development.

Activities at sites implemented by BPW chapters (clubs): Three BPW chapters are implementing the activities at sites (villages) of 3 districts.

a. Kathmandu BPW Chapali Bhadrakali village development committee of Kathmandu districts.
b. Patan BPW Sainbu village development committee of Lalitpur district.
c. Thimi BPW Sirutar village development committee of Bhaktapur district.

Activity no.1

Literacy Program - conducted for 6 months.

Results:

About 300(100 from each village) women completed functional literacy class. Women can read and write Nepali language and basic mathematics. Textbooks and other local papers, posters, flip charts were used in the class. This has helped them to read local news papers sign boards, letters etc. Literacy is also the prerequisite for other trainings.

Activities no. 2

Agriculture training- Conducting for 2 months in each village by local trainers who attended TOT.

Results:

Hundred fifty (150) women in 3 villages participated in 2 months agriculture training after completing literacy during the period Jan.2002 to Oct.2004. The objective of this training was to develop an improved agricultural practictice to get healthy products. Training was focussed on Soil management, healthy organic composting, healthy production of crops including vegetables, quality seed, use of importance of good crops, diseases and use of insecticides / pesticides. women acquired knowledge and skill on the above subjects theoretically and practically. This has helped them improved agricultural practices, which resulted healthy products.

Activities no. 3

Social Development and Enterprise Development training - Two weeks training on Social development including Gender, Community development, Leadership development and Political empowerment and Enterprise development including Cooperative management were given to 150 women from 3 villages of 3 districts.

Results:

Women were familiarized with Gender equity /equality, how to develop leadership capacity, community development and political awareness. Women acquired knowledge and skill in Enterprise development and management of women cooperative in the village through saving and credit practices which they have already started by small group formation.

Activity no. 4

One day workshop (interaction program) at the central office of BPW Nepal-. Approximately 80 women out of 150 from the villages participated. BPW members and trainers also participated. The objective of this workshop was to monitor the whole training activities including Literacy and the impact of the programs to the beneficiaries.

Results:

Most of the women expressed the positive impact of literacy class, which helped them, to go out from the house such as they can read sign boards, Bus numbers. Women demanded for further education. Women also expressed about the benefits they got from the programme such as best method of organic compost making from the household wastes and crop residues ,selection of healthy seeds, availability of these seeds in the local market, healthy vegetable production.

Women asked about the use of some insecticides and pesticides commonly used in crop diseases. The trainers explained clearly about these matters. It was quite interesting as most of the women expressed freely their ideas in front of the mass. They said, this is the gift of the programs (activities) from which they have learnt.

They have already practiced savings in the bank and eligible for taking loans from the bank after 6 months.

The ultimate goal will be achieved when they run small enterprises by taking loans from the bank and generate income for additional support to the family.
