Project: Providing Technical Skills

By: BPW Panama
Country: Panama
Catagories: Education
Duration: October 2001 - May 2002

Description:

This program was created in order to educate women in extreme poverty conditions; therefore, they will obtain the necessaries skills to apply for manual jobs with high demand in our country and for creating their small businesses.

BPW members contacted INAFORP (Technical Educational Institution in Non Traditional Careers) in order to educate and train women in poverty conditions in careers such as: dressmakers, nursing (for the elders), First Aid, Housekeeping Maid Trainee, Cooks, and basic modules in writing and reading.

In order to gain more adepts to this program, we had to provide: materials needed for the courses, childcare, transportation fees, lunch meals and medical care.

Results:

80% of the adepts were illiterate single mothers with approximately 6 or more children. After completing the program, all the participants obtained a technical certificate which helped them find an adequate job to support their families, including one woman who was mentally disable with 6 children. Another relevant issue is that some of the women were employed by BPW members as housekeepers and nursing (for the elder).
