Description:
Thai
Massage are in strong demand in Thailand,
especially in Chiang-Mai which is a popular
tourist destination. It puts the local knowledge
to good use and it requires very little
investment. So if the women are dedicate
to learn the skills and practice massaging
with the correct techniques and know how
to use local herbs for massaging, they can
earn a substantial income. Hence, improve
the economy of the local community.
BPW Chiang
Mai’s contributions were:

Identify
five instructors. |

Support
the training by providing fees for
trainers, materials for training,
tools, meals, rental fee and travel
cost in total 200,000 Baht. |

Train
25 people (21 women 4 men) in theory
and through hand-on practice. |

Take
trainees for 3 sites visits to “Siam
Spa”, “Ancient Spa”
and “Lumpang Herbs Club” |

Follow
up on the outcome. |
The curriculum
is 180 hours which consists of
- 39 hours training
on Thai Massaging Theory, which include:
- Therapeutics
ways to massage foots, knees, back,
arms, neck and head.
- Massage in various
position (lay down, sit up, lay on
the side, etc.)
- Foot massages
for health improvement.
- Using herbs
for relaxation.
- Yoga and Meditation.
- 141 hours are hand-on
training and practice massaging to people.
The
trainees also required to practice at least
80% of the required time (360 hours). Those
who passed the test would receive the jointed
certificate from Ministry of Labour and
Ministry of Health.
Results:
- Train 21 women in
Baan Mae-Kampong Village, Chiang Mai province.
- BPW Chiang-Mai assessed
the outcome on 10 May 2003, July 2003,
and November 2003.
The impacts are as follows:
- The trainees
understand the theory well.
- All trainees
complete the hand-on training.
- All trainees
practice 360 hours more. About 90%
of people receiving the massages were
satisfied with the services. During
this time the trainees also earn 20,231
Baht in total.
- The trainees
appreciate the site visit, learn more
techniques and learn how to create
atmosphere for good massaging services.
- All trainees
receive the certificates from Ministry
of Labour & Ministry of Health.
- The trainees
for a group and work together to offer
"Thai Massaging Service".
