BPWT-Chiang Mai aims
to increase the income level of the grass
roots sector to improve their living standard.
The association fosters the fundamental
concept of women’s integration into
community development. For this project,
the emphasis is on development of human
resources especially for small entrepreneur
women’s group.
BPW-ChiangMai implemented
“Skill development for small entrepreneurial
women’s group in ChiangMai province,
Thailand” project in cooperation with
other NGOs and local government organization.
Responsible organizations include BPWT-ChiangMai,
Community development department at Hod
district, Village Council in Hod districts,
and NGOs in ChiangMai.
Objective:

To
build up entrepreneurial skills of village
women in Chiang Mai province. |

To build a vital
small enterprise group. |
3. |
To increase income
levels of women in rural area. |
4. |
To promote the
sharing of knowledge and experiences
with either similar or different groups
for a beneficial impact of the current
economic situation. |
Budget:
300,000 bahts or approximately US $8,400.
Target groups: 240 women
1. 120 women in Hod
district (pilot project), Chiang Mai province.
2. 120 women from selectec districts in
Chiang Mai province.
Implementation
Plan:
(1) |
Join
monthly trips with the Chiang Mai government’s
team to visit the villagers in 22 districts
and 2 subdistricts in Chiang Mai. |
(2) |
Give
a talk to the local government officers
and villagers on the BPW services in
organizing the mangerial skill training
program in their own areas at each visits. |
(3) |
Formulate
a pilot project in Hod district, ChiangMai
province. Hod district has a total population
of 41,988 people, 21,076 of which is
female. There are six villages in the
district – dividing further into
58 subvillages (called “Moo”). |
(4) |
BPWT-Chiang
Mai committee meets to discus the situation
and possibility to find sponsors and
to approve the project and budget. |
(5) |
Coordinating
the plan and details to determine the
date, time, subject, trainers, meals
and transportation fees with local government
officers. |
(6) |
Organize
a 2 day basic training program. |

Borluang village was attended by 67
women (small entrepreneurs). |

Conclude
the result of the basic training and
do follow up visits for further necessity
of advance training.
As part of the follow up activity, BPWT-Chiang
Mai invited representative of women
groups who received the training to
join ChiangMai 1999 Annual Festival
on 28 December 1998 - 9 January 1999.
Four representatives of the six village
set up booths to show/sell their products.

Prepare
for advance training.
BPWT-Chiang Mai selected 12 outstanding
students from the training from 6 women
groups to attend Workshop on “Managing
Household industry” at ChiangMai-Suwannakit,
25 April – 1 May 1999. As for
the funding, BPWT-ChiangMai requested
and receive support from Department
of Industrial Promotion under collaboration
of German-Thai (GTZ) project. |

Other activities
in the plan includes:

Find
a professional to give a talk on design
and marketing demands and channels for
cloth products. |

Fund the resource
person in agricultural field to give
a talk on crop preserving and packaging
for marketing channels. |

Give advice on
funding resources, i.e. government saving
bank, Bank of agriculture and cooperatives,
Social Investment Fund (from World Bank). |
Organize supporting
activities for the above plan, i.e.,

Donate
blankets and rice to 200 poorest families
in Hod district. |

Cooperate with
the government of Chiang Mai to bring
music bands to perform to 1,000 people
as night time activities. This idea
is to disburse public service publicity
message that BPW and the government
officers would like to concey. For examples,
message related to drug usage, messages
to bring mutual understanding among
those concerns. |
Conclusion:
BPWT-Chiang
Mai is expecting to complete the pilot project
at Hod district in 1 year time then plans
to continue with other districts. It is
expected that by the end of the project
in August 2000, BPWT-Chiang Mai will have
influenced 240 women to become active entrepreneurs,
25% of the traned women will become very
strong and more than 2,400 villagers receive
practical benefits from this project.
Results:
The
total of 131 women were trained: 67 persons
in the first session and 64 persons in the
second session. According to the report
from the officer at Office of Community
Promotion at Hod District to BPWT-ChiangMai,
the women who received the trainiing had
increase their earning on the average of
15%.
As
the result of the booths display of products
at ChiangMai 1999 Annual Festival, the women
groups met local merchants, many of which
from ChiangMai Night Bazzar and expand the
markets for their products.
Ban
Na-Kor-Rer village in Hod district has won
an outstanding village on handicraft the
foundation of M. Jamjit Boorachat for 1999.
The
case study at Hod district was selected
by TESDA Women’s Center, Manila, Philippines
to be a case study in seminar on “Third
Country Training Program (TCTP) on Women
Responding to Economic Crisis Through Entrepreneurship
Development” held in Manila, 1-10
February 1999. Attandances include 43 delegates
from 4 countries, namely Thai, Malaysia,
Indonesia, and Philippines. Delegates from
Philippines had requested for material used
to train women at Hod district to be used
in Philippines. The project received interest
from Philippines press as the interview
on the subject was video-tape and broadcast
in Philippines.
