Attention
focused on the Athens Ethical Principles
of business practice to eradicate this 21st
C form of slavery. MSN described its partnership
success with NGOs in tracking internet exploitation.
Manpower advocated codes of conduct to ensure
employees traveling in Asia are not complicit
in the sex trade where 90% of human trafficking
is spurred on by businessmen
Businesses
are urged to audit their own workforce,
their suppliers and customers to ensure
trafficked persons are not involved. At
the least they should conduct supply chain
audits and factory inspections.
The
International Labour Organisation estimates
that 12.3 million people are forced into
slavery each year of whom 80% are women
and girls and 50% are minors. Sexual exploitation
accounts for 43%.
This
is an issue for all business people.
