The
competition was initiated in 1997 by Dr.
Chonchanok Viravan (when she was a young
BPW Regional Coordinator for Asia-Pacific)
with the approval of the Past BPW International
President, Sylvia G. Perry. Originally,
there were 3 types of awards: Excellent
Country Effort trophy, Excellent Project
Trophy, and Outstanding BPW Medals. Outstanding
Young BPW Leaders was later added in the
Second competition. Certificate of Appreciation
was added to the Third competition, to be
given to BPW in countries that financially
support the winning projects in the competition.
The initial focus of the first competition
was on motivating BPW Federations and clubs
to recruit young member age 35 or under
(then called Young Career Women) and involved
them in the projects that help women to
help themselves. Thus, in the first competition,
it was originally required that young BPW
must participate in order for the projects
to enter the competition. This restriction
was later removed for the Second Competition.
However, involvement of young BPW is still
encouraged by (1) giving additional extra
credit to the projects which young BPW participated
(2) allow young BPW who lead the projects
that enter this competition to compete for
“Outstanding Young BPW Leaders”.
