The 2nd Competition at Melbourne, Australia in 2002

The First competition at Vancouver, Canada in 1999

Beyond 2000: "Helping Women Help Themselves" is BPW International Competition which is held every three years at BPW International Congress since 1999. The competition awards trophies and medals to BPW Federations or BPW Clubs for the projects that help women in ways which enable them to sustain themselves in the future.

Type of activities that qualified are those that give women knowledge, education, skills, advices, guidance opportunities, strength, or other solutions to overcome crisis – so that women can either establish or make advancement in their businesses or professions. Activities that are not qualified are charitable activities like those that simply gave food or money to help women.

Examples of activities that qualified include professional training for women, giving career guidance, help rehabilitate abused women, mentoring, help women find jobs, child care, training skill for women, giving legal advises to help women gain their independent, giving education resources such as scholarships and books, teach women and girls to read, etc.

For each competition, three years efforts are assessed based on the number of women being help and the impact on their life.

The First competition at Vancouver, Canada in 1999

Awards were given at the XXIII BPW International Congress in Vancouver, Canada in September 1999. Four countries participated in this competition. At this competition, BPW Thailand won both the “Excellent Country Effort Trophy” and “Excellent Project Trophy”. Overall, winning projects from this competition helped over 1,100 women to help themselves during 1996-1999. See more details about winners in 1999, etc.

The competition was initiated in 1997 by Dr. Chonchanok Viravan (when she was a young BPW Regional Coordinator for Asia-Pacific) with the approval of the Past BPW International President, Sylvia G. Perry. Originally, there were 3 types of awards: Excellent Country Effort trophy, Excellent Project Trophy, and Outstanding BPW Medals. Outstanding Young BPW Leaders was later added in the Second competition. Certificate of Appreciation was added to the Third competition, to be given to BPW in countries that financially support the winning projects in the competition.

The initial focus of the first competition was on motivating BPW Federations and clubs to recruit young member age 35 or under (then called Young Career Women) and involved them in the projects that help women to help themselves. Thus, in the first competition, it was originally required that young BPW must participate in order for the projects to enter the competition. This restriction was later removed for the Second Competition. However, involvement of young BPW is still encouraged by (1) giving additional extra credit to the projects which young BPW participated (2) allow young BPW who lead the projects that enter this competition to compete for “Outstanding Young BPW Leaders”.
