Fulcher, Clair (1925-)

As dean of women, associate dean of students, and professor of education at the University of Bridgeport in CT (1954 - 1973), Fulcher worked with students, faculty and administrators using her feminist approach. She began her private practice as a psychotherapist and organizational consultant in New York in 1975. Fulcher has served as director of the National YWCA Women's Resource Center, and has been an activist in the AAUW, International Federation of University Women, and the United Nations on behalf of women worldwide. Permanent NGO representative to the United Nations for the International Federation of Business and Professional Women since 1981, Fulcher was awarded it Badge of Honor in 2005. Fulcher was also the founding convener of the NGO committee on UNIFEM; was on the planning committee for Beijing in 1995. Fulcher also represented the IFUM on the executive committee of the NY NGO committee on the status of women, was VP of the IFUM, and was a delegate to the UN Conference in Copenhagen (1980). She has been involved in branch, state, regional and national sectors of AAUW, serving as president of CT state, and as first VP of AAUW (1969 - 1977) and the National AAUW Educational Foundation Board. In honor of her service, the Dr. Claire Fulcher AAUW International Fellowship Endowment was created. Fulcher, who received the VFA Medal of Honor in 1998, received her B.A. from Pomona College, her M.A. from Stanford University, and her Ed.D. from Columbia University Teachers College.
