To this end and as part of its pre- National Congress programme, BPW Abuja under the leadership of the Health Chair, Abiodun Obakin, organized a series of campaigns across the city of Abuja. The programme kicked off with a collaborative cancer awareness and screening campaign between BPW Abuja and the Federal Ministry of Health to celebrate the 2011 International Cancer Week. This took place at Garki market on Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21 where over 500 women were screened. This was followed by a cancer awareness walk on Saturday, October 22, 2011.
Awareness and screening progamme also held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God Desire of Nations Parish on Saturday October 29th and Sunday 30th 2011 where a total of 269 women were screened. This was repeated at the Catholic Church of Assumption, Asokoro on Saturday November 8, 2011 where 45 women were screened.
The Fight Cancer campaign has been endorsed by a female-headed organization, Federal Inland Revenue Services, a major agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria. The Executive Chair of the Agency, Ifueko M. Omoigui Okauru, is collaborating with BPW Nigeria to have all the female staff of the agency across the country screened for cervical and breast cancer. It is the plan of BPW Nigeria to move the campaign to major corporate and public organizations.
