BPW Lusaka, Zambia, in collaboration with the Young BPW Zambia, held a colourful year-end luncheon on Sunday  December 18,  2011 under the theme ‘Celebrating Women Who Rock With Brains’ to honour the achievements, awards and successes that women had attained in various endeavours, particularly in 2011.
The initiative to host the luncheon was based on the need to recognise and celebrate the academic achievement of Dr. Emily Sikazwe, a Trustee of BPW Zambia, on being conferred with an honorary degree in the Doctors of Laws honoris causa by St Francis Xavier University, Canada for her work in the area of gender, gender equality and human rights.
BPW Zambia seized the occasion to celebrate to honour women that have made a contribution to the Zambian society, and to celebrate the academic achievements of young women in higher institutions of learning.  Dr. Emily Sikazwe and thirteen other women  were honoured for their successes in various fields of endeavour
For BPW Zambia, the event also marked the culmination of an important project that it undertook during the last quarter of 2011 on behalf of Africa Women’s Development & Communication Network (FEMNET) to facilitate lobby and advocacy activities on a project titled ‘Promoting African Women’s Economic Empowerment through Gender – Responsive Trade Agreements’ undertaken in five countries namely  Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.

BPW New Zealand (BPW NZ), UN Women and the Human Rights Commission officially launched 'Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs)' at Government House, Wellington on February 13, 2012. Dr Judy McGregor Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner's (EEOC) representative David Rutherford  was present.
Nine companies/corporations signed up prior to the launch and specific awards were presented  at the evening’s event, including guest speaker Michael Barnett, of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and EEOC Trust. BPW NZ  now have an additional two major corporations signed up with WEP's and now eleven companies are committed to WEPs. BPW NZ is well on its way to achieving twenty companies.

The next BPW NZ program is to hold a roundtable breakfast meeting in Auckland on March 28, and in Wellington,  March 29. A discussion panel will be held on Sunday April 29, as part of the BPW NZ Conference program with one signatory company being invited to present a case study.

Cérémonie des Bougies

[text in english]

Candle Lighting Ceremony

On February 5, 2012 members of BPW Port-au-Prince, Haiti gathered to celebrate the feast of Candle Lighting.
About thirty people including members and their guests were present for this celebration of sharing, solidarity and love. The session took place around 11hres am at the president’s home.

The session began with the reading of the card sent by Mrs. Agatha Volcy, friend member of the Club who, for health reasons, was unable to attend the celebration and who graciously sent us a check to help the Club. Then the President welcomed the members and continued with the international prayer followed by the anthem of the club. Then she went on reading the message sent by the President of the International Federation Mrs. Freda Miriklis. The theme for this triennium is "Empowered Women Leading BUSINESS", a theme that should be our model for where we want to be as "WOMEN empowered" and accountable.

Every member wanted to have a copy of this powerful and important message for women worldwide. This was done immediately by Marie Andrée. First Counselor and past president Mrs. Marie Carmel Lafontant stepped in to tell us that the Ministry for Women's Affairs has kept this same theme of empowerment of women and on this occasion a forum will be held in a few days « AUTOMISATION DE LA FEMME POUR LA RECONSTRUCTION NATIONALE ».

The President explained to us the meaning of the various candles and their representations: The biggest white candle, representing the International Federation was lit by President Marie Andrée Etienne, the second represents the United States, the first founding member was lit by the Vice President Gérarda Germana. The other white candles representing the other founding members and affiliated clubs of blue candles were lit by other members of the committee.
The remaining two candles, one of hope and the other for Tunisia, Individual Member, have been ignited by two young members of the Young BPW thus ending the candle lighting ceremony.

We also spoke of "Weekend Classes" which, in the past, had been very successful in the Club. Courses in savoir vivre, hotellerie, restoration and general culture will be provided to girls to enable them to have a business that can help on the job market. We   ended the matinee by taking a snack and sharing a cake in honor of all those members born in January and February.

BPW Japan is pleased to announce that we selected three projects for the Recovery Support Grant, “Job generating grant by women, for women.”

The grant aims to provide support to working women in the severely damaged areas by the 3.11 earthquakes and tsunami last year.  Seven projects in the affected area applied to the Grant with the conditions:
1) be organized by women;
2) have a clear future plan to promote women’s employment and revitalization of good community.  BPW selection committee members selected three of them, through site visits and interviews.  Selected groups are all small-sized enterprises which were badly destroyed by tsunami, and everything was washed away.  However, they were well motivated to rebuild their business.  If finance allowed, they would have done more.

All selected groups expressed their plan that they will increase the employment of women in the area.

On January 8th, 2012, at the Sendai Citizens Activity Support Center, BPW Japan held a ceremony to present the 1st Recovery Support Grant, JPY 300,000 (USD 400,000)/group, to the following three enterprises.  A local major TV station, Miya-Tele, televised the presentation in their evening news.

Keitono Oppai Project (Hand-knitted-breast -a training tool for midwife- Project for the elder's income generation) in Kesen-numa, Miyagi Prefecture.

Chiba Nori-ten (Chiba Sisters’ Seaweed Manufacturer) in Minami-sanriku, Miyagi Prefecture

Marine Mothers Kirikiri (Fishery processing / Fisher’s restaurant) in Otsuchicyo, Iwate Prefecture)

We greatly appreciate generous supports from BPW sisters which made this grant program possible.  BPW Japan will continue its fundraising efforts, so that we will be able to present the Recovery Support Grant to more women in the area.  We hope that the Grant will contribute to the promotion of women’s economic independence in the disaster area.

Arzu Ozyol, President of BPW Turkey, prepared a report to share the knowledge with BPW Members about the importance of women in food security and nutrition, as discussed on the World Food Day, at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Rome, on October 17, 2011.

BPW Estonia was established on November 11, 1992 and every year on November 11 BPW Estonia  celebrates its birthday. Since our first birthday we have nominated the title Woman of the Year and Award to a successful and enterprising woman who has influenced our lives and the whole society. The Birthday Gala and Award ceremony traditionally takes place in the ancient Town Hall of Tallinn. The Mayor of Tallinn participated to congratulate the Woman of the Year. This year the Award was given for the 19th time.

BPW Estonia has become well-known in Estonian society by nominating the Women of the Year.

Woman of the Year 2011 is Tea Varrak. She was the Chairperson of the Commission of Estonian Government organizing the EURO integration. Tea Varrak has also been the initiator and achiever of many interesting undertakings - first Estonian private business school Mainor, one of the founders of Fontes private school, Chairperson of Board of Enterprise Estonia.

Last year BPW-Estonia was proud to name the Woman of the Year 2010 Kristina Šmigun-Vähi, who is a worldwide known cross-country skier and two times gold medalist of the Olympic Games.

This year for the first time on the initiative of Young BPW Estonia we nominated the Young Woman – Entrepreneur. The award went to a successful young woman - Eva-Maria Õunapuu, who is the founder of company JOIK. Joik OÜ is producing scented candles and SPA cosmetics. Eva-Maria is a perfect example of a young enterprising woman. She started to make scented candles by hand because she could not find candles with the perfumes she loved on sale. Then she started sell the candles she made to shops. Step by step her business started to grow and she put new brands in production. Now Eva-Maria and OÜ Joik have their own production rooms, however, the production of candles and SPA cosmetics are made by hand because it gives a special significance to the products.

The nomination criteria of the Young Woman – Entrepreneur is age under 40, establishing and running her own company for at least 3-4 years, the company has to be  outstanding in its sector (industry/service/trade), the product/service has found a market niche and has been accredited by other participants of the same branch of the market.

On the magic date 11/11/11 BPW Baltic-Scandic international seminar with the presence of BPW Estonia, BPW Sweden, BPW Finland and BPW Latvia was held in Tallinn Estonia. The theme of the seminar was 'Enterprisingness in the changing world. With new ideas and new experiences into the year 2012'.

The keynote speaker was BPW Past President Ms Tuulikki Juusela from Finland who focused on the advantages of the Women Empowerment Principles (WEP) how to develop and promote ones organization implementing WEPs.

It's really useful and inspiring to strengthen contacts and share experience between BPW sisters from other countries.

Wow, can you believe it? Every 14 seconds a child under the age  of 5 dies from diarrhea. Another incomprehensible figure: 2.6 billion  people do not have access to proper sanitation. But you can do something  about that!
Be TOILET LADY for a day!

Collect a few cents (or  more) for every time you or your family members go to the bathroom.  Donate the proceeds of the day to Women for Water. It is a partnership of  women's organizations worldwide that work together in order to ensure  safe drinking water, proper sanitation and higher hygienic standards,  especially in the developing world. Great cause, don't you agree? So.  pull an old saucer from your kitchen cupboard, put it somewhere near  the bathroom and. start collecting coins!
Oh, and please make sure  you spread the word. Via Twitter, Facebook, Linked-in,  Email, SMS. whatever. Including the blog address www.toiletlady.org would  also be a good thing. Thanks for your efforts!
Just imagine the  amount of 'lavatory attendants' in homes all over the world by tomorrow.
Are you a real life lavatory attendant or janitor, or are you in  the hotel or catering industry? Great! You probably have pole position  then for raising money for Women for Water. Having an office job  shouldn't deter you from joining in, though.

Best  regards,

Go to  www.toiletlady.org, download the little document for people visiting the  bathroom and you are good to go. By the way, the blog also tells you how  to donate the proceeds of your efforts or directly. And you can  respond to posts. Will you let me know if you join me and my fellow  'toilet ladies'?  Great!

We, at BPW Japan, are pleased to announce that we have recently launched a Recovery Support Grant program for working women in the areas severely damaged by the earthquakes and tsunami on March 11, 2011. The generous contributions and warm encouragements from all over the world, especially from BPW sisters and BPW Japan’s fundraising efforts, have made this grant program possible.

About eight months have passed since the disaster. As of November 14, the death toll is 15,838 and missing people are estimated 3,647, and many are still living far from their hometowns. Much of the rubble have been removed, and people continue to work tirelessly for the recovery. However, many difficulties and obstacles lie ahead before full restoration.

The Recovery Support Grant, “Job generating grant for women, by women” provides small grants to the enterprises and/or women groups in the affected area. Applicants to the Grant should be enterprises whose business were badly damaged and forced to close their business, or those who lost their jobs by the disaster and are well motivated to rebuild or start their own business. Grantees will be selected from the public by BPW members through visits to applicants’ sites and interviews. All grantees should generate and encourage the employment of women.

Even though the size of the grants are small, we hope that these Grants will provide support and encouragement to all the women in the area affected by the devastation, to rebuild and renew their entrepreneurship* as much as possible.

The Secretary General called for active partnership between the UN, States Parties and NGOs, as well as among the NGOs, to strengthen their advocacy. NGOs asked questions, made comments, and in general participated with some enthusiasm in what we hope will be only the first in a series of exchanges with the Secretary General.

The Working Group of the Human Rights Council focus is to identify, promote and exchange views, in consultation with States and other actors, on good practices related to the elimination of laws that discriminate against women.

A major conference was held in France on June 28 with topics of great significance for working women, such as the division of work and family. The French Minister of Solidarity and Social Cohesion, Ms Roselyne Bachelot was responsible for the initiative of this conference.

Business & Professional Women of France, wish to extend the debate on this important subject, namely the impact of maternity or parental leave , commonly called "family leave", taken at 96% by women, on their departure from the company.

Pressure to resign after maternity leave

The INSEE figures published in February 2011 related to the employment of men and women in 2009 show large differences for reasons of departure between men and women. 11.3% of working women have resigned, against 7.5% of men. And, conversely, 29.5% of men have "benefited" from a dismissal, against 24.9% of women. This means that women are encouraged to resign rather than be fired. We know that dismissal in France is expensive for a company because the minimum legal indemnity to be paid can be extremely high after 2 years of seniority.  Companies attempt to avoid dismissing women and find  a means to push them into resignation. They are confident that women prefer to leave voluntarily when the situation becomes intolerable, in order to quickly move on and secure the future of their family.

The road to recovery from the disaster by women

We would like to thank all of Helsinki Congress participants who showed warm support for victims of the disaster caused by 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami, and especially of members who visited the booth we set up at the Congress.  We prepared the 3R-yellow vest to make an appeal to sisters to understand our zeal for the recovery from the devastation. The feedback information from Helsinki encouraged BPW members in Japan, especially members of two clubs in the disaster area, to continue to organize support system for victims there.

The board members of BPW Japan, as a women’s organization, are discussing about how we can do to help for the future of affected area.  It’s been said that, for the next stage, the most important thing we need to do is to continue to work on a long-term basis to support the affected women, and address the gender challenges on the disaster situation.  So, we started the fund raising activities.  Our future activities will include activities to raise awareness of women’s needs and more substantive role and leadership in the disaster.  We hope that in this way we raise the visibility of BPW Japan as the leading women’s organization in Japan.  The idea of 3R yellow vest came up during these discussions.  We planned to bring new vests to the Annual Meeting in Yamanashi, and then to the BPW Congress in Helsinki.

At the Yamanashi Annual Meeting, BPW Japan drafted the declaration based on the extensive working group discussions, titled “the road to recovery from the disaster by women.”  Then, it was amended and adopted as “Yamanashi Declaration.”

On June 10th, BPW Japan handed in “Yamanashi Declaration,” to Ms. Okajima, a Director of Gender Equality Bureau of the Japanese government, believing that women’s perspective sensitive to gender issues should be incorporated into the every future government’s disaster restoration and prevention measures.  Ms. Okajima appreciated our very concrete and articulate suggestions we put into the Yamanashi Declaration.  The major points of declaration are:
1) prompt restoration of child and elderly care so that women also would be able to resume to their work,
2) every shelter should have spaces to keep privacy especially for women, disables and elderly,
3) keep the share (over 30%) of women in the disaster restoration committees and management staff of shelters, and
4) keep payment for women’s temporally work at shelters or at disaster area; women are often expected to do voluntary work at shelters.

BPW Regional Coordinator Africa Promotes BPW Values and Best Practices

The Regional Coordinator for Africa, Adenike Adeyanju-Osadolor was a resource person at a retreat organized by the Nigerian First Lady on Etiquette, Protocol and Administration for the wives of all the newly elected/appointed governors and service chiefs in Nigeria. The retreat took place at the Obudu Mountain Resort in Cross River State, Nigeria between 19 and 23 July, 2011.  She seized the opportunity of her presentation on “Managing an NGO: Issues of Sustainability”, to promote the values and best practices of BPW International, using BPW as a model in NGO sustainability. This is expected to yield fruitful result in terms of growth and visibility of BPW in Nigeria.

At this meeting, it was essential for us to understand why most young ladies associations don’t survive in Zambia so as to know how to make ours succeed. It was also important for us to make our meetings not only learning and networking platform but also fun. The input from our members was amazing with suggestions such as lunch dates on our own and with mentors, book club where we as YBPW (Z) read the same book at the same time and share what we have learnt from it, mentoring younger girls who are still in secondary/high school. Furthermore, we did not want to concentrate only on the lighter side of things but also considered skill-building workshops, guest speakers for our meetings and taking advantage of all advertised training sessions. We also agreed to keep partaking in not only our own meetings but main BPW meetings as well so as to get accustomed to a more formal style of meeting and the required etiquette.

It was truly great to see young ladies together on a Saturday afternoon having constructive conversation. This is a sign of greater things to come.  We look forward to our August meeting and the networking we do after the meetings. YBPW is providing us with a platform we would otherwise not have access to, a platform that can build all aspects of our young lives positively.

Regards, Young BPW Zambia

BPW Cote d' Azur - BPW Toulon Conference, President Valerie Unite' speech about Emotional Intelligence

In its simplest form, Emotional Intelligence (EI) includes four key elements: self awareness, self management, social awareness, and management of relationships.

Studies have shown that EI is an "open system" and that it evolves and adapts by itself, based on interactions with others. Surprising as it may seem, the brain actually creates additional neurones in the process.

This means that EI is a competence that can be developed, and is now included in some Leadership Development programs.

"Women Matter" a worldwide study by McKinsey & Co showed that companies with a higher representation of women in leadership positions had superior organisational and financial performance.

Amongst the Leadership Skills observed in these women were elements of Emotional Intelligence. Valerie Unite- President BPW Cote d' Azur - valerie@align4.com

“The road to recovery from the 3.11 disaster by women.”

We discussed about women’s role in the unprecedented disaster.
The BPW Japan convened the 2011 Annual Meeting on June 4-5, 2011.  Over 140 participants, including non-members and guests, attended the 2011 Annual Meeting held at Kofu, a quiet small city surrounded by several Japanese prominent mountains including Mt. Fuji.
Experiencing the unprecedented disaster caused by gigantic earthquakes and tsunami on March 11th, followed by the serious nuclear plant accidents, many members participated in one of working group discussions, “the road to recovery from the disaster by women.”  The discussions focused on: 1) women’s employment issues, 2) women’s leadership, and 3) women’s health and security in the disaster.  All working groups brought together a wide range of women’s needs,  roles, and other issues in the disaster.  Based on these discussions, BPW Japan adopted the “Yamanashi Declaration,” which was expected to be submitted to the Gender Equality Bureau of the Japanese government later.  We hope that women’s perspective will be incorporated into the future government’s disaster restoration and prevention measures.

At the Annual Meeting, the 8th Young Speech Contest also took place, by bringing together 5 talented young women who won the block-level contests during the past year.  A young veterinarian who works as a zookeeper made a wonderful 5-minute speech, and won the first-place.  She noted that she learned the preciousness of our lives, facing and taking a hard look at reality of animals’ lives through her work.  Her speech conveyed well her passion to her own profession, and was received well among audience.

At the opening of Candle Lighting Ceremony, the message from Ms. Benham was read in Japanese, and generous support to the recent disaster victims from BPW International members was announced.  We all appreciated their kindness and friendship.  On the second day, the General Assembly was convened.  It was only the second General Assembly since the BPW Japan acquired its corporate status in 2009.  The two-day meeting was adjourned at noon.

It was an excellent chance for the presentation of the BPW to many women who were not aware of it, about 60% in the event were not associates.
The participants of the event were invited to donate foods and books, the foods being donated to the Educandário São João Batista and the books to increase the quality of the library of BPW available in Porto Alegre for the associates.

The keynote speaker of the BPW Cyprus event was the European Commissioner Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou who presented an informative and inspiring speech on this motivating subject.

The second part of the event included the 'BPW Cyprus Award to the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year'  which was awarded to three successful women entrepreneurs who started their own business without any support from anyone other than their own determination and strength. These women are really commendable for what they have achieved on their own and by giving them this award we believe that we create role models for the future by encouraging other women to follow in their footsteps.

The event was a great success with over 250 participants! and reasonable coverage in the media.

BPW Estonia has been looking for opportunities to improve the sustainability of the organization. Last year we realised that there were only a few women who still qualified as Young BPW. It is not easy but important for our future to recruit new young members to the organization.

Young BPW Estonia, Anu Ruut and Amélie Leclecq, BPW Europe Regional Coordinator

In spring 2010 the board of BPW Estonia together with Regional Coordinator BPW Europe Amélie Leclecq called to a competition of Young BPW internship in Brussels. A new young member, Anu Ruut, won the competition. Her internship took place from September,8th  till October 10th ,2010. Aim of this internship was to get better idea, how BPW Europe works and what Young BPW are doing in other countries. Our Estonian representative got good contacts and met many interesting people.

After coming back Anu started organizing Young BPW. On January 30th 2011 Young business and professional women from Estonia gathered together in Tallinn to make their plans for the future. The first thing to do was to set up goals and figure out, what were the issues that are important for us.
In the beginning of 2000´s young members were very active in Estonia, so some of them were invited to share their experience. We also invited president of Junior Chamber International Estonia to introduce their organization and to discuss possibilities of cooperation.

Young BPW Estonia decided to take actively part in the Equal Pay Day Campaign on April 12th , arrange a seminar attached to the annual meeting of BPW Estonia on April 30th  and participate in youth program during the BPW International Congress in Helsinki.

If you are interested in sharing your experience with the young BPW Estonia, please contact Anu Ruut and visit www.bpw-estonia.ee.

'Another Way' was  celebrated and organised  by BPW Valencia (evap) at the Second Congress 'Women in the World Leading the Millennium' on October 25th and 26th and held in the Convention Hall of Valencia. The Congress found new ways to manage the economic legislation in politics, to establish relationships, to use either science or communication and to believe in creating happiness.
The programme was organized in five thematic areas, all of them, as focus of analysis, included a reflection on "Another Way" about power and leadership in various areas in order to give solutions to actual new challenges.

Thematic areas:
• Another way of ruling and legislating in politics
• Another way to live in the planet
• Another way of science, ITCs and the media
• Another way of leading and managing the economy
• Another way to believe in creating happiness
In order to deal with these areas, the Congress had many of the leading women from the five continents that demonstrated and has demonstrated different ways to deal with their own professions and environment. Including  Koldo Saratxaga, a business innovation guru. Yoani Sánchez, the well-known Cuban webloger. Ishrat Shamin, the founder President of the Centre of Studies at Bangladesh. Lu Hsiu-Lien, ex Vice-President of Taiwan. Charo Izquierdo, Director of the Spanish newspaper supplements “Yo Dona”. Rita Levi, Michelle Bachelet  and many more personalities shared their experiences with us. The Congress showed us “different ways” to apply new solutions to all those social, economic and political problems from the diversity, integrity and professionalism that are the values that BPW pursues.

Helena Kekäläinen
8.11.1921 - 31.10.2010

Business and Professional Women Finland’s second Honorary Chairwoman was chosen at Litti spring meeting 2000. Based on proposals sent by clubs, the board of the federation had made a proposal of inviting VTM, economist Helena Kekäläinen as a Honorary Chairwoman of the federation. By standing up and giving a big round of applause, the people in the meeting expressed their opinion that it was the right choise.
Helena Kekäläinen’s merits were indisputable. Her actions as the federation’s president were remarkable encouraging members to act also internationally and to put the ideology of the Business and Professional Women into practice. Right until recent years she took part in the meetings of the federation and the club of Espoo.
I had the opportunity to meet Helena Kekäläinen a few times at federation’s meetings. She was there also when I was chosen as the president of the federation at federation’s autumn meeting 2006. I have positive memories of her as a supportive and cheerful person.
I was there with Irma Reponen, the president of the club of Espoo, escorting Helena Kekäläinen to her last journey at the church of Tapiola.
Our Honorary Chairwoman will be sadly missed by the members of our federation.

A platform to discuss Sustainable Development ideas and experiences with respACT opens for BPW Austria
A meeting arranged with respACT - the Austrian Business Council for Sustainable Development was most promising. respACT are the UN Global Compact focal point and after our discussions, we were informed that BPW Austria can become signatories with the Global Compact in Austria and engage in gender diversity programs. President Benham believes that a gender diversity working group could be established with BPW Austria taking a lead role to raise awareness around some of our international initiatives including - Equal Pay Day and the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). The opportunity will not only allow BPW Austria to lead discussions but forge new associations with companies that are leaders in the areas of CSR and sustainable development.  This will assist BPW Austria in their work to promote the Women’s Empowerment Principles which is a major initiative of BPW International and to seek consciously responsible CEOs interested in signing onto the WEPs. Is your club taking up the IWD challenge and has your club/federation made contact with your UN Global Compact focal point?  Ask President's Office.

I congratulate them on behalf of all the participants. I also thank the largest groups of Taiwan, Thailand and Korea for their contribution to the joyful cultural programs. The first Presidents Meeting made a step forward to strengthen the network of the vast Asia Pacific Region by important decision making to support the Regional Coordinating work: 1 euro dues per member and supportive regional committee of 5 members.
My last thanks go to the voluntary lecture on ‘Emotional Intelligence’ of Past President Antoinette Ruegg who came all the way from Switzerland to participate in the Conference and the speakers of the Plenary and Workshops including moderators.
I also thank the help of International President Liz Benham to deliver the Certificates of Appreciation given to the Hosting Committee members who worked behind the scene for several months.

The Presidents and senior members who helped to draft the resolutions and recommendations are also to be acknowledged.
Once again, we felt BPW Power to make a difference and together we made a difference. This latter part is particularly applying to the role of leaders in Singapore BPW members and I am happy to acknowledge here one more outcome of the Conference, which is perhaps the most solid outcome of the Conference.

Dr. Young Hai Park Regional Coordinator Asia Pacific

I have received very positive feedback from members who attended the North America/Caribbean Regional Conference in Las Vegas.
My thanks to EPW-USA hosts President Bessie Hironimus, Conference Chair Juelle-Ann Boyer, Registration Chair Katherine Winans, Marjorie Hopper, Eileen Brennan, Barbara Davis, Carolyn Grady, Barbara Yong, Kathleen Ray, Virginina Russell, Pat Giacontieri, who really made it come together.   We were privileged to have our International President, Liz Benham with us as well as our first Vice President Gabriella Canonica, Executive Secretary, Dr. Jean Murray and Latin America Regional Coordinator, Dr. Yasmin Darwich and learned so much from their presentations.  Past President, Dr. Antoinette Ruegg gave a meaningful presentation on ‘Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Skills’ and Dr. Pat Harrison spoke on ‘Resolutions for Congress’ in Helsinki. Elisa Campos, International Chair of Peace and Intercultural Understanding explained the ‘Peace project’ and asked us to send a flower to Helsinki.

Brief report by Bushra khaliq

As flood waters are receding in areas of Kot Addu, Punjab province, the shifting from camps to villages is going to start. After spending two to three weeks in relief camps and experiencing untold miseries, some families have started returning to their ravaged villages only to find their houses collapsed partially or completely. People are seen walking back on foot, cycles, tractor trolleys and donkey carts, loaded with usable items; like empty water cans, boxes, some ration as well as animals, goats and poultry. Broken roads, caved in bridges, tilted railway tracks, ravaged crops and rotten smell of stagnant waters altogether make a sad picture of the land, once lush green with standing crops only a month ago.

BPW Sisters, Ladies and Gentlemen... Wouldn't it be interesting if, on this 100th anniversary of BPW Toronto, the speaker could be a founding member? I wonder what she would think of us. Toronto President Mina must have been thinking of the old adage, -A half a loaf is better than none-, when she asked me to speak, because I have been a member for only half the lifetime of the Club. At the age of eighty-four, I still have all my marbles--or most of them, I think-¬so I can recall many of the Club's interests and activities in the past five decades.

At the 54th Conference of the Status of Women (CSW) held in New York in March 2010 (1 to 10) we felt, heard and understood how the many policies have positively extended. It is now possible to create and develop procedures for the involvement of multiple and differing stakeholders. Beijing keywords Mainstreaming and Empowerment ensure wide participation on different issues and involving the governments of all countries.
Personally I found it exciting to share with delegates and officials the experience of contributing ideas and strategies especially those known as the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) to be achieved in this century.

Federations and clubs are reminded that submissions to the Constitutional Reform Taskforce on the review of BPW International’s Constitution and By-laws are invited by the end of March.   Members can access the Constitutional Review Discussion Paper in English, French and Spanish (Italian translation expected shortly) on the BPW International website under BPW Constitution.  The Discussion Paper asks questions on many aspects of our Constitution and By-laws, however members can select those questions they believe are relevant to them and tell the Taskforce what they think.

Members will have a second chance to comment in stage 2 – the reform of the Constitution and By-laws.  The Constitutional Advisory Committee will be releasing a revised and modernised draft of the Constitution for comment later this year. The finalised version will be presented for a vote at Congress next year.  Dr Jean Murray, BPW International Executive Secretary 2008-2011

BPW Hanse Network Tour 2010 in Riga, Latvia

BPW Hanse invites not only Europeans, and BPW members and their friends from all over the world to take part in our activities. In June Hanse Network Tour 2010 will start in Riga, Latvia
The Hanse tradition is a well known throughout Europe; we aim to think European; the region is important, overcoming national frontiers. We build our own network, giving Hanse a face. We try to live the philosophy of the Hanse in today's world:
* to make contact across boarders and cultures
* to exchange of experiences and ideas
* for a better understanding of each others values and habits
* to build a network for personal or professional purposes
* Not every Baltic state has a BPW Club, in this way we want to participate there as well
BPW wants to participate everywhere where Hanse is organized. We make use of the existing network of the modern Hanseatic Days. They stand for an open mind the principle entrenched in BPW.

Nicole Rosenboom
BPW Hanse Network Secretary

Consultation on the Constitutional Review and Reform of the BPW International.

Members are encouraged to check the BPW International website through January for information on the Constitutional Review and Reform. BPW has posted translated versions of the Constitutional Review Discussion Paper (short and long versions).   The Constitutional Reform Taskforce requests that you send your submission by March 31, 2010 in English, French, Spanish or Italian to constitution.review@bpw-international.org.   Many questions in the Discussion Paper will stimulate your thinking, choose those questions that are relevant or interesting to you, your club or Federation or Associate Club and tell BPW what you think.  It is important that BPW hear from all the regions and from as many affiliates as possible so our new Constitution and By-laws reflect the views of the entire BPW International.
