Members BPW Member Support Pakistan - You can help!

BPW Pakistan is doing this project with the relief funds collected from BPW members.

Brief report by Bushra khaliq

As flood waters are receding in areas of Kot Addu, Punjab province, the shifting from camps to villages is going to start. After spending two to three weeks in relief camps and experiencing untold miseries, some families have started returning to their ravaged villages only to find their houses collapsed partially or completely. People are seen walking back on foot, cycles, tractor trolleys and donkey carts, loaded with usable items; like empty water cans, boxes, some ration as well as animals, goats and poultry. Broken roads, caved in bridges, tilted railway tracks, ravaged crops and rotten smell of stagnant waters altogether make a sad picture of the land, once lush green with standing crops only a month ago.

Pakistan’s Flood

As in Haiti, we now have another natural disaster of monumental proportions.

The devasting floods in Pakistan have affected nearly 17 million people with 1600 that have perished.

Every one of the provinces in the country has been affected even the mountains areas.

An estimated four million people have now been displaced in the city of Sukkur alone.

Thousands of people are still trapped in the north-eastern Pakistan in areas cut off from each other.

Sindh province , in the south of Pakistan, is now being described as the country’s worst-hit. In this country of extreme poverty we now have suffering that is beyond imagination.

Our BPW Federation in Pakistan has 8 clubs, 5 of which are in the Sindh Province: 4 in Karachi and 1 in Hyderabad. Other clubs are: 1 in Peshawar (North), 1 in Lahore (East), 1 in Islamabad (North), 1 in Quetta (Central). So far we have had news that all our sisters there are OK.

BPW Islamabad under the leadership of Federation president, Dr. Salima R. Ahmed

are engaged in raising funds and is concentrating on the Sindh province. They will be collecting and distributing over 1000 packages consisting of all basic food, utensils and clothes. Please join us in assisting with your donations directly to a fund for BPW Pakistan if you are able to do so. More information will be posted here. Please see the links below for further news.
