BPW
of Port-au--Prince, Haiti, has honored 4
of its former presidents on0 3 June 2007
On June 3rd 2007, The BPW of Port-au--Prince,
Haiti, has honored 4 of its former presidents:
Odette Roy Fombrun (90 years), Eva Abraham
(90 years), Madeleine Gardiner (81 years)
and Marie Carmel Lafontant (80 years).
During a beautiful ceremony these 4 women
have received the Honor and Merit diploma
for the accomplished work within our organization
during more than 30 years.
As the birthday of Odette Roy Fombrun was
close, we wanted to give her a special birthday
party. Madam Fombrun lived 27 years in exile
and never stopped fighting for national
unity in Africa (where she had lived 17
years) and in our country: Haiti.
She wrote a beautiful poem about AFRICA
before she left. " O Africa".
Personally I, last president of the BPW,
did a musical mounting with her poem including
texts of the famous haitian writer Frankétienne,
showing the similarities between Africa
and our country.
This was a touching ceremony and a beautiful
surprise for Odette Roy Fombrun that she
did not expect . On June 13th, there was
a sung mass in her honor followed by a reception
offered by her 5 children. It's during this
occasion that I, Marie Andrée Manuel
Etienne, former president, did the speech,
redrawing Odette Fombrun's journey in her
tireless campaign in favor of the evolution
and the promotion of women in general and
haitian women in particular; and as instigator
of many valuable projects within our Club
despite of her old age and many other activities
for she is also a writer.
She publishes etudes on education, on history,
writes school books, stories and novels
for the youth.

This
is this great lady that we honoured
recently. Marie Andrée Manuel

BPW London supports a new Award for Life
Western Ontario, the Persistence Award.
 |
Life Long Learners’
Persistence Award
The Lifelong Learners’ Initiatives
Committee provides an opportunity
to recognize and support the outstanding
achievements of a lifelong learning
student at UWO. BPW London is the
proud sponsor of the Persistence Award
for the first Life Long Learning Award
Program. President, Debbie Taylor
presented the award this year to our
very own member, Susan Dill at the
awards luncheon on Saturday, April
28th, 2007. Susan has been a member
of BPW London for 20 years. She has
been president of London Club, District
Director for District 1, and as a
member of the executive for BPW Ontario,
she has been secretary, editor of
the Annual Report, Vice President
and currently, Chair of Programs and
Projects. |
Between work, marriage
and starting a family Susan had difficulty
continuing her educational goals only
returning to school as a mature student
at age 40, now a single parent in
full time employment. She continues
to persist towards her degree despite
all odds, while being employed as
Director of Residential Programs and
Services at Women’s Community
House, responsible for two Violence
Against Women shelters. In addition
to her BPW Ontario board position
Susan also serves on other community
boards. In spite of these demands
and her family challenges of a dependent
daughter and granddaughter, the loss
of a sister and both parents, she
continues to strive toward her educational
goals. Susan hopes to be enrolled
in courses at UWO again this summer
towards completing her cross-disciplinary
degree in Sociology and Psychology.
Congratulations, Susan! We are proud
to present you with this well deserved
Persistence Award.

We
had a wonderful night of laughter and fun
at our Charter Night on Friday. I wish to
thank all the members who attended and helped
to make this event a success.
We had lots of guest and
I think more than half were under 35. We
discussed starting a Young BPW Bermuda with
them and they seemed to be very interested.
We hope to get the Young BPW Bermuda up
and running before the enc of the year.
I am asking that our members to be supportive
and show a positive attitude at all times,
especially when dealing with these young
women. They are the future and survival
of BPW Bermuda. I believe that they will
do us proud if we allow them to move forward
with a New Dimension of Leadership... yes,
over the years the BPWA Bermuda has done
great things. Now a new generation will
do similar things in their way. Of course
our role is to guide them in the process.
If you have something to share, please do
so with a loving and positive attitude.
I want to say thank you
to the Charter Night Committee for pulling
it all together. The committee members are:
Julie Hendrickson, Barbara Lewis-Mills,
Dorothy Butterfield, Omed Joseph and Faye
Butler. A special thanks to Faye and her
family for opening their home to us and
our guest.
Overall it was a fantastic night... I had
a marvelous time and I'm sure everyone else
had a great time also.

The
North America and Non Spanish Speaking Countries
in the Caribbean (NSSCC) Regional Conference
was held in Montego Bay, Jamaica on 15-18
February 2007. Monica McNeil, North America
and NSSCC Regional Coordinator, did an excellent
job in organizing this event. The first
day was dedicated solely for the Organization
Review and Reform, which allowed adequate
time for the audience to give feedback and
suggestions. The presence of almost all
member countries in the regions and 3 past
international presidents: Dr. Yvette Swan,
Dr. Pat Harrison and Dr. Antoinette Ruegg
enriched the review process.
The conference also featured
many workshops on leadership, violence against
women, etc. Country reports from the regions
were enlightening. An election for the nominee
for the next regional coordinator of North
America and NSSCC was held and the candidate
from BPW New York, Yasmin Darwich, was elected.
At the end of the meeting,
Monica surprised all of the participants
with the draft proceeding of the conference!
The final version of this proceeding is
posted on www.bpw-international.org
At the Gala dinner, BPW
was honoured by the presence of Mr. Clark,
President of Scotia Bank, a major sponsor
for the Conference as well as for many BPW
projects. The BPW International Anthem was
played and CD’s were distributed to
all the presidents and members of executives.

BPW
Barbados collaboration to prevent human
trafficking
BPW Barbados partners with
the Bureau of Gender Affairs in a project
sponsored by the International Organization
of Migration (IOM) since year 2005. IOM
wanted to alert the Barbadian Public as
to the nature and characteristics of Human
Trafficking. It wanted to put Barbados on
guard, to prevent the island from being
used as a point of distribution for human
trafficking. A coalition was formed, made
up of representatives of the agencies/organizations.
Planning meetings were held. Three public
campaigns were held in Speightswn, Oistins
and Bridgetown. In 2006, two officers of
IOM came to the island and conducted a workshop
on Human Trafficking, its implications and
ramifications. The outcome of the workshop
was that participants arranged to set up
mechanisms to do empirical research and
to set up a watch- dog operation to scrutinize
events or actions that resembled human trafficking
and report to IOM.

Equity Commission
Ontario: Business
Women join BPW Ontario and the Ontario Pay
Equity Commission in a thought-provoking,
precedent setting partnership. On October
22, 2005 at the District Meeting, held in
London, Ontario, BPW members and guests
joined Ontario Pay Equity Commissioner,
Emanuela Heyninck, Commission Program Specialist,
Linda Sullivan, and BPW Ontario President,
Sheila Crook to pilot a ground breaking
learning module. The module entitled "You
are Worth It" explores the wage gap
facing working women today and challenges
the persisting inequities that undervalues
women's contribution and threatens the future
economic viability of Ontario. Participants
internalize the thought-provoking subject
matter through a variety of self-directed
learning activities that address such issues
as wage gap, pay equity and salary negotiation.
