Step 1 - Develop Concepts and Ideas towards Setting up a Mentoring Program

  • Brainstorm ideas on why have a mentoring program – the benefits to members and to BPW
  • Select a project leader and team
  • Identify roles clearly within the core or organizing group
  • Define the mentoring concept and ideas

Step 2 - Develop a Planning Brief

  • Develop a program theme
  • Identify vision, purpose, objectives, strategy
  • Define stages and make an action plan or timeline
  • Make recommendations to members
  • Build relationships with possible corporate sponsors, trainers, speakers and supporters
  • Document the project

Step 3 - How you are going to implement a mentoring program?

  • Decide what type of mentoring program the BPW members want
  • Decide on a selection process of mentors and protégés
  • Document all decisions
  • Develop confidentiality and privacy guidelines
  • Design the program
    • What type of topics to be covered in monthly gatherings/events
    • What type of possible speakers can be invited to talk to the mentoring group on various subjects
    • Who are the knowledge experts within the BPW and outside of BPW?
    • What type of events can be organised?
  • Market and promote the mentoring program to members and non-members – to get them to join BPW

Step 4 - Implementation - Launch the Program

  • Build relationships – mentors and mentees
  • Develop a flexible 12-month program
  • Involve those from a younger generation like 20 somethings and 30 somethings in BPW activities and meetings
  • Plan a high profile event to launch the mentoring program complete with a speaker or a panel of speakers

Step 5 - Making it Happen

  • Set up operational systems – email addresses/contacts
  • Hold a group planning meeting
  • Identify mentors and mentees/protégés needs and expectations
  • Conduct flexible mentoring – email/group/phone/lunch/dinner
  • Develop monthly learning activities
  • Set up reporting and communication systems
  • Document the program and mentee feedback
  • Organise possible monthly gatherings with a program speaker on a particular subject
 
 

Suggested Brainstorming Activity To Decide the Benefits of a Mentoring Program

 

Leadership:

  • Appoint a leader, scribe, presenter
  • Select a team name

The Activity:

  • Begin with the end in mind – what do you want to achieve from this session?
  • Write the outcome on a flip chart, black board, white board as a focus point

Brainstorm:

  • All ideas are considered - 30 minutes
  • Present to the group – 10 minutes
  • Identify the key issues - 5 minutes
  • Moving Forward – an Action Plan – 5 minutes
