They all intersect with poverty disproportionately affecting women and girls around the globe. in-person and virtual
Location: Conference Room 6, UN General Assembly Building
Webcast: https://webtv.un.org/en
Single parent poverty is still a reality for millions of lone mothers and their children around the world. The rate of extreme poverty among divorced or separated women (8 per cent) doubles that of divorced and separated men in low and middle-income countries. Among 40 high and upper middle-income countries,
lone mother households have higher rates of poverty across every single country, data shows (UN Women 2020).
This event will discuss the complex risks, causes and consequences of single parent poverty, with a focus on lone mothers, highlighting best practices and promising policies to prevent and to end poverty. It will highlight intersectional approaches to design programs for and with lone mothers and discuss strategies to implement these policies in a challenging political environment.

In-Person and virtual
Salvation Army Auditorium, New York

Virtual: Zoom (Hybrid)
Event Nr. 5585243
The National Federation of Business and Professional Women and the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women invite you to an event to discuss a public health crisis that exists around the world – Period Poverty.
Period poverty is a global issue that affects millions worldwide and directly contributes to the global gender gap. Women and girls miss school and work due to lack of access to period products, which is detrimental to the global economy. More seriously, lack of access to products leaves menstruators at risk of serious health issues from using products longer than recommended or substituting products with unsanitary items.
Countries have slowly begun to address the issue of period poverty through state-sponsored programs and collaboration with civil society to provide products and services to those in need Throughout this panel, we will hear from representatives from countries working to tackle period poverty sustainably and collect best practices of what is needed to end this public health crisis.

Economic challenges among single-parenting mothers and their children in Japan
Thursday, 14 March 2024, 08:30am - 10:00am ET
in-person and virtual
Armenian Convention Center, Y room
Virtual: Zoom
Event Nr.
Single mothers are one of the most economically marginalised people in the world. Japan is no exception, with many single-parenting mothers left in poverty, with limited access to decent work. While the Government of Japan provides financial support and NGOs do aid these mothers at the grassroots level, further institutional assistance is required, as the COVID pandemic laid bare. This event provides lectures from an expert in this area in Japan. Then participants will discuss the topic and consider means to have an inclusive society for single mothers in poverty, not only in Japan but also on a global level.

The Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women's Association (PPSEAWA) recognizes that women and girls often lack economic autonomy and have less access to education at all levels, so are under-represented in decision-making on every level.
Women and youth who are marginalized due to gender, ethnicity, and migration status are especially vulnerable. Marginalized migrant women face increased risk of gender-based violence during transit and in resettlement, and experience intersecting and multiple forms of discrimination. PPSEAWA upholds the human rights of women and youth marginalized by race, ethnicity or migration status. PPSEAWA supports the United Nations Global Compact of Migration and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in their efforts to raise awareness of how migrants enrich our communities.
PPSEAWA fills the gaps where marginalized women and youth are not provided with legal and social protection systems aligned to their presence and needs. We engage in practices that prevent abuse/exploitation, alleviate stigmatization and isolation, and build up strength and resilience within communities. PPSEAWA supports programs that enable access to quality education, financial and health care services, and skills-training with the aim of self-determination and self-representation. Panelists will present practices for effective outreach and education for youth and ethnic minorities, from the perspective of non-governmental organizations in Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, and the United States.
We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Regional Asia Pacific Bureau of UNHCR in Bangkok, and our co-sponsor, BPW International (International Federation of Business and Professional Women), an international network of business and professional women who further women’s economic empowerment projects through mentoring, education, skills-building programs.

Empowerment of Women and Girls entrenched in Poverty as a Human Right and Ethical Prevention of Human Trafficking
Monday, 18 March 2024 - 12.30pm EDT - 2 hours
virtual, Zoom, register in advance
The International Federation of Business and Professional Women, Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking, and Courage for Freedom invite you to our discussion of human rights and safety crisis that exists around the globe – Human Trafficking.
Human Trafficking is a global safety and security issue that disproportionately affects women and girls. The commodification of persons in sex, labor, forced marriage, and surrogacy is an issue that is growing at alarming rates yet challenging to prove. This crime against humanity affects millions worldwide and is directly associated with other criminal activities and harmful practices and health outcomes to families and their communities.
Through this panel, you will hear presentations and conversations by Survivors whose lived experiences and Stakeholders whose work represents a vast collection of best practices and ethical responses addressing poverty and human trafficking intersections that are working. Yes, Institutional reforms are necessary in all areas, along with economic backing to support the work ahead but it must be ethic-centric.
We invite persons from all government, sectors, ngo agencies, economic sector and industries to come and hear what is needed to end the coercion, manipulation, and exploitation of some of our most vulnerable populations through empowerment around the world.
