On October 24th, the world marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations — a global symbol of hope, peace, and cooperation. For BPW International, this moment is deeply meaningful. Our organization has walked alongside the UN for nearly its entire history, sharing a common vision: a world where women are empowered, equal, and active agents of change.
Since 1947, just two years after the founding of the United Nations, BPW International has held consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). That means BPW has had a seat at the table for 78 years, helping shape international policies, representing women’s voices, and contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable global agenda.
From the very beginning, our founder Lena Madesin Phillips believed that women must be present wherever decisions are made — including the United Nations. And so we have been.
A Voice for Women Worldwide
Every year, BPW women from across the globe participate in key UN events, such as the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York. We organize parallel events, present local initiatives, and advocate for gender-responsive solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges — from climate change and digital inclusion to economic equity and peacebuilding.
BPW International also has UN Representatives in New York, Geneva, Vienna, Paris, Nairobi, and Bangkok, who volunteer their expertise to ensure that women’s voices are heard in all global arenas. We are proud to see Young BPWs stepping into these roles as well, continuing our legacy into the future.
A Partnership of Purpose
This long-standing partnership with the UN is more than symbolic — it’s active, dynamic, and impactful. Through decades of dialogue, advocacy, and action, BPW has remained committed to the core values of the United Nations: human rights, dignity, equality, and peace.
Together, we’ve championed the Beijing Declaration, contributed to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and promoted women’s leadership in politics, business, and society.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate 80 years of the United Nations, we also celebrate the unwavering commitment of BPW women around the world — those who speak up, step forward, and shape the future.
We are proud of this historic connection.
We are inspired by what we have achieved together.
And we are ready for what comes next.
Happy UN Day from BPW International — 78 years of partnership, advocacy, and transformation.
