50 Years After Iceland’s Women’s Day Off

Dear BPW Sisters around the world,

Today, October 24, we honor a powerful moment in the global fight for gender equality: the 50th anniversary of Iceland’s historic Women’s Day Off — a day that showed the world what happens when women stop.

In 1975, 90% of Icelandic women left their jobs and homes to protest against inequality and make visible the critical role women play in all areas of society. Their collective courage stopped an entire nation and made headlines across the globe.

This action — known as Kvennafrídagurinn — marked a turning point. It brought together women across generations, backgrounds, and beliefs. It inspired legislation, conversations, and progress. And today, five decades later, it continues to inspire us.

This year, women in Iceland are once again taking the streets — demanding action to close the gender pay gap, to end gender-based violence, and to accelerate equality for all.

As President of BPW International, I believe this anniversary is not just a commemoration. It is a call to action.

Let us be reminded that when women unite with purpose, change is inevitable. Let us honor those who paved the way by continuing their legacy with determination and strength.

Together, we shape a more just and inclusive world — for ourselves and for future generations.

In sisterhood,

Diana Barragán

President, BPW International
